"Downtown Chic," by Robert and Cortney Novogratz

A few weeks ago I received a copy of this book, "Downtown Chic," by power couple Robert and Cortney Novogratz, the minds behind design firm Sixx Design. The very talented, artsy, detail-oriented Novogratz purchased their first home 10 years ago in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. They began renovating their home, without realizing it would eventually kick start their careers in design. After many residential projects, they have completed their first non-residential project the Bungalow Hotel in New Jersey. The book covers some great concerns home owners have while trying to renovate their homes. The best thing about this book is there are so many pictures to pull ideas from and each chapter gives you steps on how to achieve the look in that specific chapter. For example, Chapter One "Our First House: Before and After" gives us images of their house when they bought it and images after they renovated and they provide details that help you understand the process clearly. I love that they use so many pieces from flea markets, which are mostly very budget friendly.  While reading the book, I felt like I was actually sitting with one of the Novogratz and having a one on one conversation, very simple and comfortable. I feel like if it was a pocket size book, you could carry it around with you and pull it out for reference when needed, because it has so many helpful pointers. The Novogratz, along with their beautiful 7 children will be debuting their new reality show on Bravo in January 2010, called Design Sixx.

Vintage day bed used to make this nook feel cozy and welcoming. Love the orange and red accents.

No one said you need to spend thousands of dollars to get a stylish room.
Blue Leather Chairs: $250 ( a steal for those glam chairs!)
Faux Snakeskin Dining Chairs: $80 each
Kartell Ghost Plastic Chair: $100

Throughout the book there are these wonderful, motivational and inspiring quotes by many artist.

The Novogratz use pieces from so many different parts of the world. The vintage blue column is from India, the desk is from a science lab in Paris! French wastebasket, Belgium globe and the blue chair from  an athletic club in Manhattan. THis room is conveniently called The Global Room

My fav! All white rooms with a burst of color. This room makes me giddy and playful.

The pink chairs were bought for $20! ( and then reupholstered)

I am absolutely in love with this antique bed from Bali and super jealous they got it for 50% off!

Don't forget to pick up a copy of Downtown Chic, available at!
